This course is designed to teach you basic-level swimming skills. It is dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills you will need to plan and teach specific courses in the aAmerican Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program.
To participate in the Basic Swim iInstructor course, you must be at least 16 years old and be able to demonstrate the following skills at Learn to Swim Level 3
- Front Crawl: 25 yards
- Breaststroke: 25 yards
- Elementary Backstroke: 25 yards
- Sidestroke: 25 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water
- Tread water 1 minute
- Complete the water competency sequence: step into water and totally submerge, float or tread water for for 1 minute, rotate one full circle and orient to exit, swim 25 yards without stopping and exit the water.

The purpose of the Shallow Water Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level shallow water lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 5-feet deep and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.
To enroll in the Shallow Water Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled class session.
To participate in the course, you must be able to pass a prerequisite skills evaluation by doing the following:
- Swim 100 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. You should place your hands under your armpits.
- Complete a timed event within 50 seconds: starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed, submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills they need to assess, recognize and care for patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction or opioid overdose.
When a patient experiences a life-threatening emergency, healthcare providers need to act swiftly and promptly. This course emphasizes providing high-quality care and integrating psychomotor skills with critical thinking and problem solving to achieve the best possible patient outcomes

Learning Objectives • Apply concepts of effective teamwork when caring for a patient experiencing a life-threatening emergency. • Integrate communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills during a high-performance BLS team response. • Apply a systematic, continuous approach to assess, recognize and care for adults, children and infants experiencing a life-threatening emergency. • Perform a rapid assessment for responsive and unresponsive adults, children and infants. • Effectively care for adults, children and infants in respiratory arrest. • State the principles of high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants. • Identify BLS differences among adults, children and infants. • Provide high-quality chest compressions for adults, children and infants. • Deliver effective ventilations to adults, children and infants using a pocket mask and bag-valve-mask (BVM) resuscitator. • Demonstrate effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for adults, children and infants. 2 | Basic Life Support Fact Sheet • Provide high-quality BLS care for adults, children and infants in single- and multiple-provider situations. • Deliver effective abdominal thrusts, back blows and chest thrusts for adults, children and infants with airway obstruction. • State the principles of care for a patient experiencing an opioid overdose.

Purpose The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program is designed to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person when minutes matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.
This program offers a choice of First Aid, CPR and AED courses in traditional classroom or blended learning (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats, in addition to optional skill boosts to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.

Learning Objectives ■ Describe how to recognize an emergency and gain confidence to act. ■ Explain how to lower the risk for infection when giving care. ■ Understand legal concepts as they apply to lay responders, such as consent. ■ Describe the emergency action steps: CHECK—CALL—CARE. ■ Identify when it is necessary to call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency number. ■ Explain how to check an injured or ill person who appears to be unresponsive. ■ Explain how to check a responsive injured or ill person. ■ Demonstrate high-quality CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for a person who is in cardiac arrest. ■ Demonstrate first aid care for a person who is choking. ■ Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following sudden illnesses: shock, asthma attack, anaphylaxis, heart attack, opioid overdose, diabetic emergencies, high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. ■ Describe methods used to control life-threatening bleeding, including the application of direct pressure and the application of a commercial tourniquet. ■ Demonstrate the application of direct pressure to control life-threatening bleeding. ■ Explain when a commercial tourniquet should be used, and describe the basic principles of using a tourniquet. ■ Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following injuries and environmental illnesses: burns; head, neck and spinal injuries (including concussion); heat stroke; hypothermia; poison exposure.
